Marathon runners require a slow and steady release of energy which means they should choose foods which offer a "slow burn" (A.Bean, 2013). For those who are not on a food combining diet, carbohydrates and protein meals offer sustainable energy suitable to meet the dietary requirements of a marathon runner. Examples of this type of nutrition include meals such as fish with potatoes and salad, brown rice with vegetables and chicken or omelettes with 3 Bean Salad.

If discomfort is experienced when combining protein and carbohydrates the athlete might consider leaving a gap of 2 hours between the consumption of carbohydrate and protein and taking digestive enzymes to minimise discomfort. For events in excess of 90 minutes, carbohydrate is imperative to maximise muscle glycogen stores and it is generally recommended that 5 -- 7 grm of carbohydrate for every KG of body weight is consumed.

Ordinary non-training adults are advised to consume 2 -- 3 litres of water a day as a basic minimum.

During a run, the athlete will lose extra body water due to a number of factors which include rate of sweat, environmental temperature, humidity, clothing, gender, body surface area and acclimatization (Griffin 2005). Therefore runners should increase their consumption of water during and after exercise to replace lost fluids. They will inevitably require more than the average recommendation of water and should consume water during and after exercise.

Taking fluids during marathons offers a further opportunity to intake some much needed carbohydrates and nutrients in the form of glucose and salt during a race. The ideal fluid to consume during a marathon run should contain no more than 8 per cent carbohydrate in the form of glucose or sucrose and a teaspoon of salt. Such sports drinks are available and are sold as isotonic or electrolyte drinks. An inexpensive homemade version can be created by adding 50 -- 70 g of ordinary sugar and a large pinch of salt dissolved in warm water and flavoured to taste with a vitamin C capsule. This can be added to a litre of filtered water and chilled in the fridge.
